Can anyone tell me about the aircraft in the foreground of the
attached set of web cam pictures?

It looks like an Extra but I can't recall seeing any with that
bubble canopy. Is it a particular variant, a one-off modification,
just my imagination or what?

Looks like a RV-4 to me.

It looks like a Van's RV-4 homebuilt. The successor to it is the RV-8,
which is a highly popular plane.
